Fran West's involvement with aged care and dementia patients began in 2009 when she visited two residential facilities in Adelaide and residents viewed her Australian coast from the air series.

The DVDs contained aerial views of Australia's stunning and varied coast as she photographed it during her circumnavigation of Australia and other flights.

Fran's photos captured the attention of the residents who afterwards told her that they brought back memories of their own trips around Australia.

This interest sparked an idea and Fran was then asked to produce some DVDs for the men because of the lack of products available for them. She produced Awesome Aviation DVD and Maritime Mix DVD (the ladies also enjoy this one).

However, changes needed to be made to the format.

The two coastal DVDs (Colours of the Australian Coast and Shapes of the Australian Coast), were only about 13 minutes each (too short). Anything over 30 minutes was too long, so about 26 minutes was just right!

Also, captions weren’t required. People could then look at the photos and listen to the soundtrack
without having to concentrate on written or spoken words. (However, Australia's Coast from the Air DVD is the only DVD which has captions)

Based on requests from and consultation with diversional therapists, healthcare professionals and activities and lifestyle coordinators, more DVDs have been produced and other products have also been added to the range.

As you can see, following her own dream has now led Fran to improving the lives of patients and carers with reminiscence, recreation and activity products for dementia and aged care.

P.S. Until November 2012, Fran's mother Edna (who had moderate dementia) road tested many of Fran's products and gave her valuable input into their development.
